FAQ: Futon Frame Sizes

Futon Frame Formats

Futon frames come in different armstyles, sizes and colors. This can make picking the right futon a little more of a challenge unless you understand the basics. On this page, we have tried to simplify the process by briefly explaining the differences.

Futon Frame Arm Rests

Some armrests are wider than others which is why one futon might measure 76 inches wide while the other measures 86 inches wide. Do not assume that all full size futon frames, for example, are the same size.

Futon Frame Sizes

There are six basic futon sizes available. They are queen sofa, full sofa, loveseat, twin, single (cot size) and chair. Each size is meant to help fill the customers' space requirements. The illustration below will show you all the futon formats.

Queen and Full Size Futons

Queen and full size futons have mattress that go length-wise between the arms. The arms basically act like a headboard and footboard and the quests usually sleep parallel to the wall. These are usually referred to as futon sofa beds, because they are roughly the size of an average sofa bed.

Queen Size Futon Sofa

Because queen size futon mattresses are basically 60 x 80 inches, they take up more space than the other futons. If the armrest of the futon you like is 2 inches thick, then you can guest that your futon will be about 84 inches wide.
Arm Rest= 2" x 2 Arms= 4 inches
Queen Futon Mattress = 80 inches
80 + 4 = 84 Inches wide
If you do not know the width of the arms, but you know what size the futon is, you can subtract 80 inches from the total to get the total width of the arms. Divide by two and you know the width of each arm. This is most useful when you decide that you want a specific width arm and you are trying to decide if you want a queen or full size (a full is five inches smaller).

Full Size Futon Sofa

A full size futon is 54 x 75 inches. The full size futon is also considered a sofa format like the queen, but because it is five inches shorter, it can help to save space. In the same example above, our futon would have measured 79 inches. The narrowest full size futon frame is 75 inches long.

Other Futon Sizes

The irregular futon sizes are the loveseat, twin, single and chair. It is good to keep in mind that some irregular sized futons come in standard bed dimensions and others do not. For example, a twin size lounger has an extension piece that turns the unit into a chaise lounge, while a twin loveseat might only be able to seat people and not be the true length of a twin. The best thing to do is to read the specific futon frame page you are looking at to determine whether the futon frame can sleep guests or whether it needs an additional attachment of some kind to make a bed.

Loveseat Size Futons

A loveseat is usually about 21 inches shorter than a full size futon sofa, but can often sleep two people. This is because a loveseat usually uses the same size futon mattress as the full futon--that is, if the loveseat includes a lounger format. This lounger format, often called a "pullout" or "loveseat extension" allows a section from under the seat to pull outward and extend the length of the loveseat into the room. It makes a chaise lounge in most cases, when you leave the back upright.
When you let the back down the length from the wall to the center of the room becomes 75 inches. The width between the arms is 54 inches. If you remember from the Full size sofa dimensions, the full size futon was 54 x 75 which is why a loveseat lounger can sleep two people. See the illustration below to help you visualize.
Finally, it is important to consider a split mattress option or a cascading option for your loveseat.

Twin Size Futons

Twin Size futons, like the loveseat style futons, can be purchased in a chair style or a twin lounger. The chair style does not include an ottoman or extension and so it cannot sleep a person. The twin pullout, however, forms a twin bed when the extension is pulled out and the back is let down.
Like a loveseat, the person who sleeps on a twin sleeps between the arms with their head at the wall and their feet pointing towards the center of the room.
Like the loveseat, as well, you will need to decide whether you want a split mattress or a cascading mattress format.

Chair Size Futons

Chair size futons that have ottomans or extension pullouts are commonly referred to as a single and measure 28 x 75 long when in the bed position. The regular chair does not make a full length bed and requires an ottoman to make a full length cot. Chair futons are often best for kids or as a last resort will at least offer an adult a better place to sleep than a floor.
Therefore it is best to consider them to be most like cots. Like the twin and loveseat styles, the chair format can be purchased with a split mattress or cascading mattress. We have provided videos here, of the cascading formation to give you and idea how both formats work.
